Director-Steven Frears
2013
A journalist decides to do a human interest story about a woman whose child was sold by the catholic church, which leads them on a journey to America in an attempt to find out what happened to the child.
This film was a bit of everything; a drama, a road trip, a mystery and elements of comedy. It had the clash of personality element which is a cliche of cop films, with Steve Coogan's reporter seeming to live on a different planet to Judi Dench's Irish mother. I was never bored, and the more tragic elements were not aloud to make to film dowdy with the injection of humor.
The film explored a fair amount of themes that feel very pertinent, such as whether journalists should write about such private things, fears over what the catholic church has done and the hold of religion. It was captivating to watch and I thought the performances were great, though I admit to being no great judge of acting.
My only annoyance was the treatment of the retrospective scenes. It seemed to be deemed necessary to impose this grainy effect over it all. This just confused me and distracted from what was happening. It seemed rather too much 'in the olden days'.
Apart from that I found it was a great film, nice and heartwarming but not sickly sweet.
